Dear KCET Member,

The fiscal year at KCET comes to a close at the end of June. Like most nonprofit organizations, KCET has suffered during the present economic crisis. Our donations whether they be from individuals, corporations, or foundations, have become smaller and fewer. Like never before, we have had to prioritize our spending in order to remain the vigilant guardians of the funds with which we are entrusted.

Our top priority is the programming we produce and distribute, on television and online, which touches millions of people, from the youngest members of our community to our senior citizens, on every rung of the economic ladder, regardless of their ability to contribute to our mission.

As I have said on-air during our pledge drives, our PBS dues are $7 million per year. That’s what it costs us to bring you the PBS programming you depend upon. In the new fiscal year, those costs will remain the same, despite the downturn in our sources of revenue. This means that we have to reduce other expenses to offset this imbalance.

In light of this, we feel it is a prudent and necessary business decision to discontinue publishing our printed program guide, effective with this issue. This is not an easy decision to make. The magazine has been a part of KCET for nearly 45 years.

But in addition to economic imperatives, times change. Over the past three years, we have seen a drop in the use of the magazine by 25%, as more members choose to get the KCET program listings and highlights on KCET.org or from their cable guides. KCET eNews can now be emailed directly to you on a biweekly basis providing up-to-date programming information and downloadable printer-friendly listings. We have included information about how to sign up for KCET eNews below.

New challenges present opportunities, and we’re taking a fresh look at everything we do in order to find the most efficient ways to continue to serve the public. Your management team at KCET will always be frugal with the funds you donate to us, and sometimes it is necessary to make difficult decisions, such as the elimination of our printed program guide, but we hope that you understand that this is necessary to preserve the robust program service we have always provided to the public.

Sincerely,

Al Jerome
