Members of the KCET Community Advisory Board
|
 |
The station's connectivity with its viewers and supporters would not be possible without the help of the Community Advisory Board (CAB). This group of volunteer community leaders is the nucleus of much of the station's outreach.
Their function, as mandated by Congress in 1979, is to offer input to KCET on its programs and services as they relate to the special educational and cultural needs of the various communities we serve.
CAB members serve a six-year term, with new members joining throughout the year, which means the faces and backgrounds of the members are constantly changing. The Board can be as large as 25 members, and currently represents most of the diverse groups that make up KCET's viewership. Because KCET covers 11 counties, and serves residents who speak dozens of languages, work in a multitude of jobs, and represent a racial, ethnic and lifestyle mosaic that is unusually varied, the CAB must reflect that. Current members represent issues and constituencies literally from A to Z -- from aging and Asian Pacific interests, to substance abuse, welfare, and youth.
The CAB meets on the second Wednesday of each month, at 5:30 pm at the station.

Through dozens of different activities that support the station, KCET's Community Advisory Board plays a vital role in keeping the station connected to its viewers.
By hosting and working on various yearly events. CAB members play a vital role in helping KCET acknowledge Asian-Pacific Heritage Month, Women's History Month, Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, and Gay and Lesbian pride month. These activities include fundraising for celebratory events, selecting community leaders to be honored, distributing literature, organizing panel discussions, and suggesting appropriate programs for air.
By identifying local resources and services offered on air or on the KCET website, that complement the subject matter of important national programs.
By suggesting appropriate guests and stories for Life & Times and other KCET productions. CAB members have also appeared as guest experts on KCET local programs.
By working to support the promotional activities for particular programs in targeted communities.
By offering evaluations of KCET's program schedule, website, magazine and other activities.
By attending and assisting at KCET special appearances within the community.
By helping at KCET pledge drives. CAB members volunteer to take calls and pledges from new members during the station's on-air fundraising campaigns four times yearly.
By bringing back to KCET suggestions and input from the community on issues that the station needs to address in its programming.
To inquire about or contact the KCET Community Advisory Board, please email us at cab@kcet.org or call (323) 953-5435.
