SoCal Connected, KCET’s weekly TV news magazine, swept the Los Angeles Press Club’s 51st Annual Southern California Journalism Awards Sunday night, winning in four of the five TV categories for a total of five awards – three first place and two second place. One of the country’s oldest and most prestigious journalism competitions, the awards honor the best reporting in a variety of categories for broadcast, print and online media.

KCET airs the story of local war hero, Cpl. Williams T. Perkins, Jr. on Thursday, November 6 (8:30-9:00 pm).  While serving as a Marine Corps. combat photographer in Vietnam, the young man from the San Fernando Valley, threw himself on an enemy hand grenade saving the lives of his fellow Marines at the cost of his own life.

LOS ANGELES, CA September 24, 2008 – Southern California public television station KCET is on track to deliver a bigger audience to a revamped BBC World News telecast tailored specifically for PBS audiences this Fall as part of its distribution partnership with BBC World News. The newscast is cleared in all 30 top markets, 46 of the 50 top markets and is also on track to maintain its U.S. TV household coverage of nearly 90%.

When 11-year-old Eleonore Schoenfeld took up the cello at the suggestion of her father, she no longer competed directly with her older sister, Alice, a violin prodigy. During her illustrious lifetime, the younger Schoenfeld went on to become one of the world’s leading cello performers and teachers. Her remarkable story is featured in Born to Teach: Reflections on the Career of Cellist Eleonore Schoenfeld, an original documentary airing on KCET on Sunday, August 24 (6:00 – 7:00 p.m.) that traces the life of the renowned professor who taught at the University of Southern California (USC) Thornton School of Music for nearly fifty years.

WaMu and KCET announce the seventh annual Black History Month Unsung Hero of the Year Award honorees for 2008. The award acknowledges individuals of African-American heritage who have inspired others and enriched their communities, ultimately improving the quality of life for all. 08/27/07 KCET TOPS LOS ANGELES AREA EMMY® AWARDS AT 59TH ANNUAL CEREMONY
Winning more awards in a single ceremony than at any previous time in its 43-year history, KCET won six statuettes at the 59th Los Angeles Area Emmy® Awards held Saturday night. The wins followed 15 nominations in eight categories that often saw KCET productions competing against each other. In addition, the station tied with KNBC for most wins for the evening. Presented by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the awards ceremony was broadcast live over the Internet from the Academy’s Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood. The "All-American Presidential Forums on PBS" Moderated by Tavis Smiley will give Republican Presidential candidates an opportunity to make their case on the issues of concern to people of color. The Forum will take place on September 27th from 9 to10:30 p.m. (EDT), broadcast live on PBS from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. An announcement regarding confirmed participants will be issued later this month, but all the major candidates are expected to participate.
