Requirements
Non-Paid, School Credit Only (unless otherwise noted) 15-20 hours per week, Summer Semester.

Candidates must be attending a 4-year accredited college or university; provide KCET with "proof of credit" or an authorization verified by their college; complete an internship application and agreement; and, write and evaluation on their internship.


Interns will enjoy a professional work environment gaining "hands-on" experience in their field. You will work alongside skilled professionals and have the opportunity to build business relationships that will help you network.

Upon completion of your internship, not only will you gain school credit, but it will also enhance your credentials on your resume, which may open the door to an exciting career!


COMMUNICATIONS (Editorial and Publicity)
Editorial Intern: Do you desire to work as Magazine or a Newspaper editor one day? KCET-TV has a brand-new internship opportunity that will offer you the opportunity to provide writing and research support for the KCET Magazine and ViewPoint. Will serve as a proofreader while researching and writing weekly HD program descriptions for the KCET website. Responsible for researching upcoming programs; writing descriptions, photo captions and short articles on KCET Programming or events; assist with pulling and scanning artwork and also managing KCET image files. Will also be responsible for researching blogs for the newly launched Life & Times blog, including contacting other bloggers and insiders about the stories to be posted on the blog. Required hours are 15 to 20 hours per week. Non-Paid Internship for school credit only.

Qualifications:Must have strong written and communication skills. Ability to Multitask must be very detail-oriented. Basic knowledge of Microsoft programs, including the use of a Macintosh computer and Photoshop a plus. All majors are welcome.

Publicity Intern: An excellent opportunity to learn basic skills for entertainment publicity. Assist with the press at special KCET events. Develop press mailing lists. Prepare press releases and other publicity materials. Assemble press kits and other press mailings. Respond to press requests for information on KCET. Help organize and maintain publicity print materials and photos. Required hours are 15 to 20 hours per week. This is a non-paid internship, for school credit only.

Qualifications: Must have strong written and communication skills. Ability to multitask must be very detail oriented. English, Journalism or Communication majors preferred.
ENGINEERING OPERATIONS
Engineering Intern: Exceptional opportunity exists with KCET's Engineering Department to learn Broadcast Operations and Production for a television studio. Students will learn about the many aspects of television production including: engineer field production, A/B-roll logging, cueing tapes, assist in recording video feeds, technical maintenance, ingesting tapes to video servers, technical management and broadcast operations, assisting with sound production, off-line AVID editing, on-line editing, camera set-up and stage management. Required hours are 15 to 20 hours per week. This is a non-paid Internship for school credit only.

Qualifications: Engineering majors with an emphasis in either Electrical or Maintenance Engineering highly desirable. Strong math aptitude, computer proficiency is essential. Must have a strong interest in becoming a broadcast engineer.
PROGRAM MARKETING
Marketing Intern: Will function as a Sales Assistant Trainee and see the sales operations of a television station. Will have exposure to clients and learn how advertising in a public television programming is marketed for non-commercial on-air. Required hours are 15 to 20 hours per week. This is a non-paid internship for school credit only.

Qualifications: Must be interested in Sales or Marketing. Proficiency in MS Word and Excel, Marketing, Business and/or Sales majors preferred.
NEW MEDIA (Multimedia, Video Editing & Website related projects)
The KCET New Media department produces websites and interactive content to support both local and national programs. Additionally, the department produces an online cultural magazine and curates podcasts from local institutions for kcet.org's Explore CA. The New Media department has received numerous awards including the Japan Prize (NHK) and the Peabody Award.

Multimedia Intern: The student will assist the New Media Department in producing web content for both local and national projects. Duties include video encoding, light HTML coding, photo manipulation, copy writing and editing, research and curation, and other duties as assigned. Required hours are 15 to 20 hours per week. Non-paid internship, for school credit only.

Qualifications: Must be computer literate with HTML programming skills, and familiar with web production software, Photoshop and video editing software. Knowledge of JavaScript, PHP, CSS, Flash and popular web publishing tools is desirable. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are needed. Major in Design, Communications, Computer Science or Media Studies is desired.

Video Editing Intern: The student will assist the New Media Department in producing video for the web on national and local projects. Duties include video capturing, editing, versioning, encoding, meta-tagging, archiving and other duties as assigned. Required hours are 15 to 20 hours per week. Non-paid internship for school credit only.

Qualifications: Must be computer literate and familiar with video software, preferably Final Cut Pro. Must be familiar with other video software and hardware including Adobe Premiere, DV and DigiBeta formats, analog A/V cabling, and popular video codecs for QT/FLV/WMV/RM. Excellent editorial, organizational, and time management skills are needed. Major in Design, Communications, Computer Science or Media Studies is desired.
NEWS & PUBLIC AFFAIRS
News Assistant Intern Description: "SoCal Connected" is a new weekly newsmagazine program produced by KCET (PBS) for Southern California. The series will cover issues, controversies and offer viewers features, commentaries and interviews. It will also have an active website.

We are looking for interns to help researchers, producers and reporters with story development, tape logging and newsroom duties. Required hours are 15 to 20 hours per week. Non-paid internship for school credit only.

Qualifications: Journalism majors or minors, preference given to broadcast journalism majors. Intern(s) must be reliable and cooperative with solid computer skills and on-line research skills. Both graduate and undergraduate students considered.
PROGRAMMING & PRODUCTION
Production Assistant Intern: "A Place of Our Own" (and Los Ninos en Su Casa in Spanish) is a daily television series devoted to the unique needs of people who care for pre-school age children. The daytime talk show is a four camera live to tape show that is looking for interns to work in the production of the show. If you are interested in working in television production or broadcasting, this is the perfect opportunity to receive hands on experience in the field! We are looking for enthusiastic students to work in the following areas: assisting the talent coordinator, tape logging & stocking, set-production, location field production and researching on the internet. You might also be responsible for maintaining the database, making copies, answering phones and filing. We go out of our way to assure that each intern has some time in the studio while we are shooting. Required hours are 15 to 20 hours per week. Non-Paid Internship for school credit only.

Qualifications: Must be computer literate. Must have strong communication skills. Multi-tasked. Must be very detail oriented. A major in Film/TV, English and/or History, Screenwriting is preferred. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is highly desirable. An interest in Educational programming is a plus.

Production Assistant Intern: "Tavis Smiley" Talk Show airing weekdays at 11 pm is looking for interns to work in the production of the show. If you are interested in working in television production or broadcasting, this is the perfect opportunity to receive hands on experience in the field. You will have the opportunity to meet with producers, directors, entertainers, politicians and sports figures. We are looking for students to work in the following areas: assisting the talent coordinator, tape logging & stocking, teleprompter control, set-production and researching on the internet. Responsible for maintaining the database, making copies, answering phones and filing. Required hours are 15 to 20 hours per week. Non-paid internship for school credit only.

Qualifications: Must be computer literate. Must have strong communication skills. Multi-tasked. Must be very detail oriented. A major in Film/TV, English and/or History, Screenwriting is preferred.

Program Development Intern: Will assist the Executive Director of Program Development in the Production & Programming Department. Will read and write synopsis of KCET submissions; research on the internet, library and phone as needed for current projects and proposals. Must have an interest in public television programming (documentaries and dramas). Responsible for maintaining the database, submissions, making copies, answering phones and filing. Required hours are 15 to 20 hours per week. Non-paid internship for school credit only.

Qualifications: Must be computer literate and knowledgeable in creating and/or working with databases. Excellent communication and written skills. Ability to analyze and critique. A major in Film/TV, English and/or History, Screenwriting is preferred.
