Performance
Whether in theater and drama or performance art and dance, poetry is captured in bodies in motion. Performance takes many forms. The black box theaters of Los Angeles provide an antidote to Hollywood largesse with intimate and experimental performances; Shakespeare gets a new twist when performed in the woods of Topanga Canyon; and performance artist Guillermo Gómez-Peña investigate border politics. Dance is an orchestra of opposites; shoring kineticism with stasis, creating narratives with movement, and channeling music into action. In high school parking lots and backyard parties, new dances are born and broadcast to the world in online videos. Warehouse operas infuse old school drama with new energy. Performance is an extension of language and an expression of what lies within.
