The 2015 summer series at the historic Aero Theatre in Santa Monica opened on Tuesday, June 2 with Fox Searchlight's Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, written by Jesse Andrews and directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon ("American Horror Story").

Based on Andrews' best-selling young-adult novel of the same name, the film tells the uniquely funny and moving story about an awkward high-school senior, played by Thomas Mann (Project X, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters), and a gravely ill classmate, played by Olivia Cooke ("Bates Motel," Ouijia), who surprise themselves by becoming inseparable friends. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, the film has been receiving rave reviews, including a happy crowd of KCET Cinema Series members.

Pete Hammond joined screenwriter Jesse Andrews, director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, the film leads Mann and Cooke, along with other cast members, newcomer Rj Cyler (Earl) and Katherine Hughes (Madison) for a lively post-screening Q&A. They discussed working together and shared their memorable experiences of attending the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.
