KCET's thrice-yearly screening series is back for Spring! Join us as we preview eight major new films prior to their first run local release.
Hosted by nationally recognized film expert Pete Hammond, the KCET Cinema series allows you to review the best of Hollywood, independent and foreign films Tuesday nights at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in North Hollywood. A lively Q & A follows each screening with the filmmakers and top movie talent.
March 1 is our opening night, featuring Win Win, starring Paul Giamatti, Melanie Lynskey, Amy Ryan and Jeffrey Tambor. This series will also include The Lincoln Lawyer, starring Matthew McConaughey, Trust directed by David Schwimmer, and The Conspirator, directed by Hollywood legend Robert Redford.
WIN WIN (Fox Searchlight Pictures)
A lawyer who moonlights as a High School wrestling coach suddenly discovers a star athlete but things get complicated when the boy's mother shows up threatening to ruin everything. Paul Giamatti, Melanie Lynskey, Amy Ryan and Jeffrey Tambor star. A hit at Sundance directed by Thomas McCarthy (The Station Agent, The Visitor). Q&A follows with co-star Melanie Lynskey.
DESERT FLOWER (National Geographic Films)
The stirring autobiography of a Somalian nomad, circumcised at 3 and sold into marriage at 13 who then flees Africa and becomes a supermodel on the world's stage and now at 38, a UN spokesperson against female circumcision. Stars Liya Kebede and Sally Hawkins. Q&A follows with star, Liya Kebede.
THE LINCOLN LAWYER (Lions Gate Films)
Based on Michael Connelly's page-turning best seller a lawyer conducts his business from the back of his Lincoln town car while representing a high profile Beverly Hills client. Stars Matthew McConaughey, Josh Lucas, Ryan Phillipe, Maria Tomei, John Leguizamo. Q&A follows with author Michael Connelly.
TRUST (Millennium Entertainment)
A suburban family is thrust into crisis when their 14 year old daughter meets her first boyfriend online and strikes up a relationship that turns to disaster. Highly dramatic and riveting film Stars Clive Owen, Catherine Keener, Viola Davis, Liana Liberato. Directed by David Schwimmer (Friends). HENRY'S CRIME (Moving Pictures)
An aimless man who works as a toll collector becomes an unwilling participant in an ill-conceived bank heist. In jail he meets a con man who a year later will join with him in the ultimate heist in a bank vault connected to a theatre. In order to pull it off he becomes the lead actor in a production of The Cherry Orchard and complicates matters by falling for his leading lady. Highly entertaining comedy stars Keanu Reeves, Vera Farmiga, James Caan. &A follows with Margaret Tritch, President of Moving Pictures.
THE CONSPIRATOR (Roadside Attractions)
From Director Robert Redford comes the story of Mary Surratt, the lone female charged in the assassination plot of Abraham Lincoln. As the nation turns against her she is forced to rely on her lawyer to tell the truth and save her life. Stars Robin Wright Penn, James McAvoy, Tom Wilkinson, Kevin Kline, Alexis Bledel, Evan Rachel Wood, Danny Huston. EXPORTING RAYMOND (Samuel Goldwyn Films)
Hilarious docucomedy details the actual experiences of CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond's creator Phil Rosenthal's experience when he is asked to go to Moscow to become a consultant on the all-Russian version of his hit show. POM WONDERFUL PRESENTS THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER SOLD (Sony Pictures Classics)
Oscar nominated Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) is back with his latest comedic documentary expose on the world of product placement, branding and marketing in entertainment. This film was fully financed through product placement of various brands which were integrated transparently into the film. With humor and insight Spurlock uses his inimitable style to unmask the secrets of the marketing process that permeates so much of what we see these days. QQ&A immediately follows with star/director/producer/writer/brand spokesperson Morgan Spurlock.
