Previewing 'The Kings of Summer'

Another wonderful season of film at the KCET Cinema Series comes to a close with a spectacular bang as we preview one of the most rave reviewed films to come out of this year's Sundance Film Festival. Already hailed as an instant classic, "The Kings of Summer" is a coming-of-age comedy about three teenage boys who fulfill every misunderstood kid's fantasy of running away from home and breaking free from the rules.

Joe Toy (Nick Robinson, "Melissa & Joey," "Boardwalk Empire") desperately craves independence from his micro-managing dad. One day when he's had enough, he escapes to a clearing in the woods with his best friend Patrick (Gabriel Basso, "Super 8," "The Big C") and a strange kid named Biaggio (Moises Arias, "Nacho Libre," "Hannah Montana"). It's there that they declare their ultimate independence as they go on to build a house of their own where they're to live free from responsibility and parents. Their idyllic summer does pose some challenges though, as the boys navigate living with each other and facing what they've left behind. "The Kings of Summer," directed by first-time feature-film director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, also boasts a stellar cast of the adult variety, including Nick Offerman, Megan Mulally, Alison Brie, and Mary Lynn Rajskub.

But it's the young stars of the film that steal the show and, lucky for KCET Cinema Series members, all three will be in attendance next Tuesday after our screening for a Q&A with series host Pete Hammond!

You can catch "The Kings of Summer" in theaters on May 31st. Also be sure to check out the delightful teaser trailer (definitely worth a watch) here.
