KCET's New Children's Line-Up

Happy New Year, Southern California!

As you know, KCET has recently become the largest independent public media company in the country.  In setting the new schedule, we remain committed to young children, and worked hard to find quality, entertaining and educational programs. We are proud to announce our new children's schedule and the launch of the new KCET Kids & Family Channel, a 24/7 digital multicast channel dedicated to serving young viewers, their families and caregivers.

We are very excited to welcome these programs to our schedule.  The Jim Henson Productions Construction Site as well as The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss are exactly the type of children's programs you would expect from Jim Henson and public television.

We're also very pleased to be able to include Busytown Mysteries, also known as Hurray for Huckle with their well-loved characters. Peep and the Big Wide World is an award-winning series with a strong science curriculum that we have long wanted to schedule for KCET. We also hope that the return of Sid & Marty Krofft's programs to broadcast television will provide some opportunities for family co-viewing. In my family, it's become an opportunity for my husband to share his favorite songs as a child with our son.

KCET KIDS & FAMILY CHANNEL

KCET has also launched our new KCET Kids & Family (KCETFAM). We know sometimes children friendly programs have not always been available when you need it, and now it's available 24/7. KCETFAM features lively, entertaining, educational and multilingual programs for young children and tweens.

Some highlights from the channel include:

  • Big Green Rabbit, which encourages families to make good decisions about their health and the health of the planet;
  • Signing Time, the multi-sensory series that introduces children and their parents to American Sign Language (ASL), a "hands-on" second language used by millions;
  • Wild Animal Baby Explorers, a series that empowers children to investigate the wonders of the natural world;
  • Zula Patrol, a dynamic, focused and fun learning experience about science and exploration that inspires children to think innovatively and approach problems even handedly;
  • Wunderkind Little Amadeus, a series about young Mozart on his boyhood adventures set against the composer's unforgettable compositions that inspire children to make their own music and discover ways to overcome challenges with clever musical solutions;
  • Anne of Green Gables: The Animated Series, based on Lucy Montgomery's classic novels, the series follows the adventures of 10-year-old Anne Shirley as she faces timeless problems kids face such as self-esteem, gossip, bullying, friendship, sharing and more;
  • Curiosity Quest, an upbeat educational family program that sends host Joel Greene to search for answers to viewers' questions.

For the tween set we offer BizKid$, an entertaining, fast-paced series that teaches kids how to use credit wisely and how to be their own financial managers, and The Saddle Club, a series that follows three 12-year-old heroines who form the Saddle Club at Pine Hollow Stables; relationships and personal development are emphasized as the girls meet the challenges of riding, caring for their horses, while juggling school, home and growing up. KCETFAM also premiered this week My Hometown from the television arm of Canada's Knightscove Media Corp., starring some familiar faces Jay Baruchel (Million Dollar Baby), Shawn Pyfrom (Desperate Housewives) and Amanda Walsh (Sons & Daughters).

You can find KCET Kids & Family Channel on 28.2, TimeWarner Cable ch. 237, Cox ch. 103 and Charter ch. 310. I invite you to preview these programs and the new channel. Send us your thoughts and comments!  As we move forward in developing our own productions, we would love to hear from you.
