Join the Skirball Cultural Center for a night of Classic Films: Artistic License. The Skirball will be presenting a series of films that explore Hollywood's idea of the artist, all of them leading up to the November 17 opening of the exhibition Maira Kalman: Various Illuminations (of a Crazy World). It all starts with the 1965 film The Agony and the Ecstacy.

From the Skirball:

"Commanded by Pope Julius II (Rex Harrison) of sixteenth-century Rome to create the religious frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo (Charlton Heston) struggles as much with the pontiff as he does with the limits of his own physical endurance. Based on Irving Stone's novel, The Agony and the Ecstasy was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Art Direction, Cinematography, and Music. Directed by Carol Reed. (1965, 138 min. No MPAA rating.)"
