From Zocalo:

The United States, once a nation of lackluster cooking, has over the past three decades become a nation of people obsessed with food. Specialty markets bring organic food to millions of customers who used to put up with less appetizing produce and meats. Farmers markets are a nationwide phenomenon. At the sushi restaurants Masa in New York City and Urasawa in Beverly Hills, customers spend over $500 a head to sample the freshest fish flown in from halfway around the world. We create identities based on diets--vegans, locavores, and pescatarians multiply--and politics seem to enter into even mundane grocery aisle decisions. But not everyone can afford to eat organic and sustainably. And some people don't believe that we are what we eat. Good food tends to be enjoyable for those who eat it, but is it good for anything else?

February is Lamb Lovers Month, and in celebration of the honored meat, FoodGPS.com presents the inaugural Lamb Showdown. Chef Walter Manzke of République and Factory Baking Company will face off with Zack Pollack and Steve Sampson, the chefs and co-owners of Sotto Restaurant, to see who can prepare the tastiest lamb dishes.

From the FoodGPS site:

Guests will enjoy a six-course meal, with the talented chefs going head-to-head on four savory courses featuring American lamb, and two desserts starring sheep's milk dairy. Every diner gets a vote on which chef delivers the boldest flavor, most originality, and best presentation. The winning chef earns $500, and of course greater glory.

Three Eagle Rock Brewery beers, which are included in the ticket price, are served during the dinner. Remember that February 20 is a national holiday, so metered parking is free.
Co-op 28 Gallery hosts an opening reception for this new group show by two local artists.

From the gallery website:
GeoVanna Gonzalez offers work which illustrates the dualities of life and death and growth and decay by employing the use of empty, open space and dense complexities of lines all seen in her drawings, paintings and books. Patrick Haemmerlein explores themes of nature vs. industry and how they coexist. His images stem from photographs taken in Los Angeles and his hometown in upstate New York and juxtapose rural scenes with urban realities.

The exhibition runs from Feb. 15 through March 3.
