Enter a world of free flying butterflies and stroll through a beautifully landscaped temporary exhibit housed at the Museum's South Lawn. See a giant swallowtail, monarch, American painted Lady or even a California dogface - California's state butterfly. Over the summer, thirty different butterfly and moth species will call the pavilion home. Discover how butterflies interact with the plants and gain a new understanding of various environmental issues.

Learn about Japanese cultural traditions in this workshop with Reiko Kawamura while practicing the techniques of Moribana, Heika, and landscape arrangements. H.K. (Habib Kheradyar) Zamani’s new paintings, sculpture and video continue the artist’s investigations of material, substance, form and function that began with his Fabric and Armature paintings and objects from 1993 through 2003. Shelter from the Storm will include several new paintings that use as their subject a geodesic dome surrounded by planetary eclipses, densely painted with a mirror-like silver chrome surface.

Los Angeles-based Kori Newkirk is a multimedia artist whose practice transforms everyday materials into loaded signifiers, making viewers think not only about concepts of African-American culture and beauty, but also about new and ever-changing ways of making art. Immigration: A Transfusion to the Body Politic explores the tension between the individual's urge for self-affirmation and the longing to establish connection with the universe. The art and panels probe underlying values and principles regarding immigration. They will explore the relationship of the individual to the group since the beginnings of recorded history and at the same time look at reasons for immigration, current federal immigration policy, and the impact of immigration in American society. Featuring artworks by Barbara Strasen and Luis Moreno.

Now through October 12, Between Earth and Heaven: The Architecture of John Lautner, Exhibition
Between Earth and Heaven features newly crafted large-scale models that give a sense of the internal spaces and scale of key projects and digital animations reveal architect John Lautner’s construction processes. Short color films convey the sensation of movement through these buildings and their sites, helping the visitor to feel the “vitality within repose” that Lautner sought to create. Surrounding this dramatic core is a wealth of archival materials, including never-before-seen drawings, architectural renderings, study models and construction photographs which offer visitors insight into how the structures and spaces unfolded in Lautner’s mind and emerged physically in their settings.

The first mid-career survey of the work of Marlene Dumas (b. 1953, Cape Town, lives in Amsterdam) to be organized by an American institution. Dumas’s rigorous investigation of the human condition is manifested through portraiture, figuration, and her ongoing, painterly exploration of the body. The exhibition includes over 100 paintings and drawings and is organized according to specific subjects Dumas has examined throughout her 30-year career, including children, pregnant women, the dead, and the female nude.
