1970s: Temporary Discothèque

John Guzman of Face to Face was one of the first generation of DJs in the Eastside of Los Angeles that helped form what would become one of the biggest regional subcultures in Southern California history. Eastside DJ culture had its own fashions, music styles and attitudes that were organic to the area and developed from the milieu of growing up bilingual, in an area where a minority was the majority. The role of technology in everyday life was also beginning to grow at a faster pace and new opportunities for economic experiments were expanding.

Hi, I am looking to get a hold of as many DJ's , Promoters, Party Crews, Girl Crews, and party people that were partying in the East L.A. / Montebello area back in the 80's &early 90's. I am planning to hold the biggest "Flashback" party next year for my 40th and would like to go back to the days of Mini Trucks and Mini Skirts! So break out your Aquanet and hit me up by e-mail at: shrtdog99@yahoo.com with your contact info and tell me about yourself and a little memory you have of "Our Days"...I'll be sure to get back to you with a "Flyer!" Oh! and Tell a Friend and have them tell a friend too. Thanx.

I finally got to check this site out. Wow, a trip down memory lane. Gerry, you referenced Brandy's in your mix. I remember a few times being allowed to DJ the opening set there. I say "being allowed' cause i was only 13 & 14 at the time. i knew one of the owners and i helped DJ Joe Casillas aka Midnight Desire set up his sound system. Oh happy days!

John "The Mexican Magnum P.I." Guzman the only DJ that hit the big time in his own era. The only reason I became a DJ is because of this outstanding DJ. John you are in the history books as a TRUE DISCO ICON! Others will try and try to knock you, they will never have what you do...talent on the turntables and your charisma! Mario Vinde Champagne

Hey wassup to all the old time party goers in east l.a., montebello, highland park. My name is 'Trooper" ' from the "East L.A. Suspects"., (which no longer exists) We partied hard from 1992 until 1995 when the scene was rockin hard. I remember we foight for map points, our guys earned stripes in several battles that were fought all over east l.a. and highland park especially at "24 Hours" tacos on whittier and Soto back in 1992. Where are all the party people at? Hit me up so we can maybe throw a big flashback party. Remember the old saying on the flyers? "Come in peace or leave in pieces? Ha ha ha All former members of all party crews from this era are encourage to respond to this message. Take everybody, I know we are all getting old!!
