Gerard Meraz of the Wild Boyz and The Brat Pack stepped into a thriving DJ scene as a teenager. He had heard of the DJs that came before him and how some had moved into club residencies, large halls and massive events at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena. When he started he was just one of about 20 DJs at his high school. He knew he had to prove himself so he too could be club DJ with his own residency. This was the paradigm of the Eastside DJ scene.
I used to party with the divine dolls. LoL... This brings back memories. Good job! DannyDivine/Modern Love & The Outsiders Fantasia

I spent hours on this story. My wife and I are both products of LA and the 80’s. We met at these house parties and are still going strong today. My wife Elsie, was listening to your story on the radio and told me about it over dinner. After dinner we both rrushed to the computer and brought up your story. Thank you for preserving these memories. My wife and I listened for hours. So many memories came back to us, memories we haven’t thought about for years. The mix music section on the website was so great; We started dancing in our room and laughing about the good old backyard party days. I just wish I could find a mix with all those songs again. Thank you for all your hard work it really allowed us to relive some special moments. Let us know if you come up with anything else or have a ne

It is great to see this part of LA history get the attention it deserves.

Took me way back. So glad to see someone held on to all this great history. I hung with Major Motion Mini's From La Puente and cruzed everywhere passing out flyers for all the backyard parties. The 80's were the best times in my life. I loved the DISCO music, the parties, the places and the people. The Rock of the 80"s in Pico where so much fun, always left with no voice, from yelling out our group names.. We won at Frenches, In El Monte, Flirtiagious Babes,, So many good memories,
Thanks and keep up the great work.

The 80's mix did bring back memories of the East L . A. party's and also the Lynwood, SouthGate, Downey, and Bell Party's, but me almost being 40 years old I still listen and play this type of music when I get a chance to DJ. I really enjoyed this! Great job! DJ Ray Ray

Its just amazing how even though I live in Texas a thousand miles from L.A in a town of mostly Mexican Americans our youth in the 80's was so similar. In reading about the backyard party scene it made me remember my youth making and passing out flyers at the local cruise spot (toys r us)for upcoming parties. I remember our krew Boyz in Kontrol and all the others (kinky boyz nasty boyz...) It just makes me smile. Thanks forbringing back so many memories.

I really enjoyed your photos and footage on the Fashion and Music from that era. I was very much apart this era, fromm what I was told I must have been the first black Dj in the Los Angeles Disco and Newave scene to have had spinned or played High Energy Disco, Disco, and fast Disco. I was called Dj Science back then, I have most of all my 12" record collection from the 80's. i am currently serving in the U.S. Army and Just completed a tour in Iraq. I am Staioned at Fort Carson, CO, I will be make a special guest Dj appearence at the Radisson in uptown Whitter with East L.A.'s own> Dj Time ( Marcos and Xavier). on Xmas weekend and New Years eve. Thanks for the excellent work on the culture, I sure hope I could meet with you in the future. TX
