Case Study House Program
The Case Study House Program is one of the most significant movements in post-World War II architecture. Created in 1945 by John Entenza of Arts & Architecture magazine, the program included the building and design of 36 experimental modern prototypes single-family homes in Southern California.
The Program aimed to shape the course of the post-World War II building boom, by creating a widespread acceptance of modern architecture that offered technology-based affordable new housing.
The Program ran from 1945 until 1966 after the demise of Arts & Architecture magazine. The first six houses were built by 1948 and attracted more than 350,000 visitors. While not all 36 designs were raised, most of the homes were built in Los Angeles.
With his iconic photographs of The Case Study Houses, Julius Shulman insured the public acceptance and influence of the Case Study Program throughout the world.
