TV for Caregivers
KCEd will build upon the assets of Southern California public television station, KCET, forge new community partnerships, and utilize the full power of television and emerging interactive technologies - to help caregivers fulfill their roles as children's first teachers and thereby improve children's readiness to learn. KCEd's primary goals are:

1. Reach “invisible” care providers and their young charges.

"Invisible" care providers – relatives, neighbors, and domestic workers – care for the majority of two to five-year-olds in Southern California in informal, unlicensed settings. Most of these caregivers lack adequate opportunities to learn about child development or appropriate means to cultivate children's growth and development.
2. Provide relevant professional development for diverse caregivers.

KCEd's program content for caregivers will be developed with great attention to the characteristics of adult viewers. Beginning with the testing of pilot program segments and continuing throughout production, caregiver focus groups will provide feedback on the relevance of KCEd's content and format to their own situations and experiences.
3. Connect caregivers to the greater early childhood education community.

KCEd will decrease the isolation of caregivers and raise their awareness of other community resources that also can support them in preparing children to succeed in school. It will link caregivers with the greater early childhood education community.
4. Recognize and reward exemplary practice.

Knowing that television is the best medium for recognizing peoples' accomplishments, KCEd will build into its programming acknowledgment of caregivers who incorporate ideas and strategies aired on KCEd.
5. Increase caregiver effectiveness

KCEd programming will model best practices and provide direct professional development and support for caregivers. Electronic and printed resource materials and outreach activities will augment professional development opportunities.
6. Improve children's readiness to learn

KCEd programming will help caregivers prepare preschool-age children for formal schooling. It will incorporate up-to-date knowledge of how young children learn and will be based on professional and state guidelines delineating the concepts and skills that are necessary for school success.
