After weeks of record temperatures the Southland is finally beginning to move towards fall. That means tossing on an old jazz record, cozying up with a movie and ... heading to an oyster festival? All that and more is on tap for this week, in addition to all the pervasive beer pouring surrounding the monthlong Oktoberfest. Here are a few fun events we've found to help you navigate your week.
Tonight, KCET's Cinema Series continues with an advanced screening of the new Ben Affleck film Argo. In case you haven't seen the dozens of billboards across town, Affleck plays a shaggy State Department fixer determined to return a cluster of American hostages in Iran. If you'd rather enjoy your movies al fresco, the Barnsdall outdoor movies schedule is running through the end of the month. This week's film is Sunset Boulevard.
Anyone looking for a dance party should get their tickets now for Madonna at the Staples Center for her two-night stand. The longtime hit maker is coming off of her lengthy international tour, where she's been wooing crowds with a mix of old favorites and new tracks from her recent release MDNA. Interested in something a bit more classical? L.A. Philharmonic conductor Gustavo Dudamel has reimagined the popular Maurice Sendak children's book Where The Wild Things Are as a live multimedia production, complete with video animation, hand-drawn images, a full band and actual actors. The limited production runs through the weekend only. Elsewhere, the Angel City Jazz Fest enters its closing weekend with a full slate of funky sessions happening all over town, so check the calendar if you're looking for a little jazz in your life.
On the food front, it's a seafood smorgasbord. To start, the downtown iteration of popular fusion dinner spot Chaya is hosting a month long Crustacean Food Fair, complete with handcrafted seafood dishes that are sure to please your taste buds. In addition to the plates, Chaya's glasses will be overflowing with drink specials and curated cocktails. Or, if you want to get out of town this weekend, the Ventura Oysterfest is hitting the beach along the Central Coast. The Saturday shindig combines regional seafood with some of Ventura County's best restaurants, plus a beer garden filled with local craft brews. Between the seafood, the movie nights and the music overload, there's no excuse not to have a little fun this week.
