With Thanksgiving around the corner and thermostats going on at night, everyone is feeling the desire to wind down and relax this week. Maybe you'd like to stay cozy with a movie, or relax with a nice view and something chocolate-y to nibble on. Feel like reading some of your Autumnal poetry out loud, or letting someone else do the talking while you quietly listen on the beach in Venice? No matter what you're thinking, there's an event for you happening somewhere around town this week.
For that movie night you've been wanting, KCET is offering up the latest installment of their weekly Fall Cinema Series at the Academy of TV Arts & Sciences in North Hollywood tonight. They're screening an adaptation of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, with director Joe Wright and lead actress Keira Knightley sticking around for a Q & A to follow. If you're perhaps in the mood for something more upbeat, Thursday's Super Serious Show is a live stand up and sketch showcase for some of the best talents in Los Angeles. The event will feature comics Kurt Braunholer, Andy Kindler and The Birthday Boys, as well as free beer from Eagle Rock Brewery, wine from Cube Marketplace and the Border Grill truck on site.
Or, if you're near the beach, you can catch comedian / magician Penn Jillette discuss his latest book of essays at Bergamot Station. As the speaking half of popular comedy duo Penn & Teller, Jillette has a lot to say on the lunacy of American holidays with his most recent work, titled Every Day is an Atheist Holiday! Or, wait until Friday night to experience an evening of Beat era poetry. The Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center in Venice is staging a loose recreation of an original Beat poetry night, complete with live readings of famous works from Jack Kerouac and others.
Come this weekend, it's time to relax with some desserts and chocolate. First, the Chocolate Invitational Fall Festival is happening at the Great Spirits Ranch in the hills of Malibu, with tastings, pairings and other fun events happening all day long. Alternatively, the Getting our Just Desserts food festival is out in Santa Monica. The afternoon event is dedicated to all things sweet, with celebrity pastry chefs in attendance, cookbook signings, tastings and a pressure-filled demonstration from local culinary arts students using a small list of mandatory ingredients. And what better way to round out an event-filled weekend than with a whole day filled with sugary sweets?
