Illuminated manuscripts, or illustrated versions of text, were in high demand during the Gothic Period in Europe, which lasted from about 1200-1350.
Gothic Grandeur: Manuscript Illumination, 1200-1350, a new exhibition at the Getty, "showcases a range of books, from lavish prayer volumes and Bibles, to illustrated scientific texts and romances." The Getty also obtained the Abbey Bible, considered a pinnacle of gothic illumination. It will be on display as a part of the exhibit.
