A measure that would require most foods made with genetically engineered ingredients to be labeled in California appears to have lost Wednesday morning.
Prop 37 would have required labeling most food made with genetically engineered ingredients, and prohibited marketing such food as "natural." However, some items, such as milk, and beef that was fed modified grains, would have been exempt from GMO labels.
Spending on the two sides of Proposition 37 exceeded $50 million, but was notably uneven. The No side raised about $45 million, of which Monsanto, the world's leading maker of genetically engineered seeds, contributed over $8 million.
The Yes side raised only about $7 million.
