It's exciting news for those looking to ski on Mammoth Mountain and maybe cross country ski the various spots throughout greater Mono County. But right now, the continuing winter storm is making travel in the area difficult, but not impossible.

Caltrans is requiring chains and/or snow tires for stretches of the 395 Highway between Independence and June Lake Loop. The same restrictions apply for the loop, Highway 158, itself, the 203 into Mammoth Lakes, and both sections of the 158 toward Aspendell and the Nevada state border. Even driving a mountainous section of the 190 in Death Valley National Park between Panamint Valley Road and Emigrant Campground will require chains.

All east-west passes over the Sierra Nevada Mountains south of Topaz Lake are currently closed. Those are Monitor Pass (Highway 89), Ebbetts Pass (Highway 4), Sonora Pass (Highway 108), and Tioga Pass (Highway 120).

Some mountain roads maintained by Inyo County are also closed, pending plowing. Those are Horseshoe Meadows, Onion Valley, and Whitney Portal. The roads damaged by summer storms -- Panamint, Trona Valley, and Saline Valley -- also remain closed.

No major county roads are currently closed in Mono County.
