When California officials announced the closure of 70 state parks earlier this year, some communities wouldn't accept the reality their local park would be gated in 2012.

Park rangers thought poppies had peaked last week, but nature had other plans. There are still no carpets of orange, but for wildflower enthusiasts there's reason to celebrate at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve:

Today park rangers announced that the state flower has peaked at California's most poppy-ulated area, the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve. But don't get too excited yet, they warned.
