L.A. Mayor Announces Support for Cigarette Tax Measure

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will join ranks with cancer survivor and cycling superstar Lance Armstrong, the American Cancer Society, and others in support of Prop 29 on the June ballot.
The voter initiative would impose an additional $1 tax on each pack of cigarettes, revenues from which would go toward funding cancer research and smoking cessation and prevention programs.
The mayor is scheduled to appear at a press conference at Children's Hospital Los Angeles at 1 p.m. tomorrow to discuss , along with Armstrong and representatives of the measure's major backers.
