Solar Record in Germany Dwarfs Solar Record in Sunny California
April 18, 2013 5:10 PM
by Chris Clarke
Commentary:
Both Germany and California set solar power production records this week, but it hardly seems fair to Germany to mention California's milestone in the same paragraph.
Commentary:
A report by a leading utility trade association says that rooftop solar could spell doom for utilities, and recommends that power companies push for a clampdown on energy democracy.
Commentary:
If we cut down on coal use here and then ramp up coal exports, we undermine our own progress on climate change. Whether the coal is burned in Utah or Uzbekistan makes little difference to rising sea levels
'New Eco Friendly Water Pipeline' Probably Not All That Eco-Friendly
March 5, 2013 11:43 AM
by Chris Clarke
Commentary:
It's a little far afield from the Golden State, but ReWire got an emailed press release last week that piqued our interest. The release, concerning a water pipeline project in New Mexico, made the claim that powering that pipeline with solar and hydroelectric power would make that pipeline "eco-friendly." But something about the release raised our skepticism.
McCoy Solar Okayed for Legal Fast Track, Democracy Suffers
February 28, 2013 11:40 AM
by Chris Clarke
Commentary:
The McCoy Solar Energy Project in the California desert got a huge boost this week, as California Governor Jerry Brown certified the 750-megawatt NextEra solar development in Riverside County for expedited legal review under his recent, undemocratic reforms to the state's landmark environmental law.

It's become clear that developers are increasingly eyeing the area just north and east of the Mojave National Preserve.
A Critical Eye Toward Solar on Farms But Not Deserts
February 15, 2013 3:30 PM
by Chris Clarke
Commentary:
Those who want to keep solar plants off prime farmland get more respect than their counterparts in the desert. Why is that?
What Happens When A Developer Abandons A Desert Solar Project?
February 11, 2013 6:00 PM
by Chris Clarke
Commentary:
It was once lauded as the "nation's largest solar project." That was before the developer went bankrupt. Now, the site stands seemingly abandoned, a drift of blowing dust and invasive grass where once there was thriving desert.
The Onion or Fox News: Who Had the Better Solar Satire Story?
February 8, 2013 10:20 AM
by Chris Clarke
Commentary:
Fox News and The Onion each offered up a story on solar electricity recently, and it's interesting to compare the two. One of the pieces was so laughably inaccurate it could only have been satire. And the other was by The Onion.
Commentary:
Critics of opening up public lands to renewable energy development have been known to refer to the process as "privatization," pointing out that one public land is leased to energy companies, that land is essentially no longer public. ReWire and a handful of citizen activists got a poignant reminder of just how true that is on Thursday.
