This program tells the history of one of America's most famous passenger trains that operated between 1937 and 1971. The Daylight (a Southern Pacific train) ran between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Part of that scenic route was along 113 miles of the Pacific Ocean coast. The train was called "the most beautiful train in the world" because of its striking colors - red, orange and black - that represented the colors of California. Many of the interviews are with people who were passengers, train crewmembers, or managers of the railroad. Newly discovered 16mm professional color film footage was used to showcase the streamlined steam locomotive designed specifically for the train in 1937. The program is hosted by Michael Gross and has been entered for a regional EMMY.
