The Treblinka extermination camp was built by the Nazis to eliminate the huge captive Jewish population in occupied Poland. In a frenzy of mass murders lasting almost two years, as many as 900,000 Jewish men, women, and children, including the inhabitants of the Warsaw ghetto, were murdered in this tiny camp hidden deep in the woods.
No one liberated Treblinka -- captives had to fight their way out to survive. A few hundred slave laborers did so in August of 1943, and only one witness, Samuel Willenberg, is still alive today. Most recently, Kalman Taigman died in 2012.
