Binh Rybacki fled Vietnam in 1975 during the fall of Saigon and moved to Colorado. She reluctantly returned in 1993, and found a country very different from the one she left. The documentary A Necessary Journey tracks the fearless, irreverent Rybacki and Children of Peace International's medical team on a transformational 17-day road trip through Vietnam. Their mission: to relocate and set-up health clinics while dealing with last-minute changes imposed by Communist government officials. They move from the remote northern mountains to the fast-changing streets of Hanoi and then on to Hue, the Imperial City flattened by the 1968 Tet Offensive, and finally, to the cycle-choked streets of cosmopolitan Saigon. As she travels the length of Vietnam, Binh confronts the ghosts of the past.
