International monitors have expressed concern that press freedom is weaker than it was and should be in the world’s largest democracy. With restrictions on the internet and text messaging being used to prevent violence and cartoonists making news for their arrests over their work, The Outsider debates: Free speech in India is under serious threat. Speaking in favour of the motion are N. Ram, the former Editor in Chief and now Director of the Hindu newspaper, and Madhu Trehan, journalist and founder of the Newslaundry website. Speaking against the motion are Shashi Tharoor, member of parliament for the Congress Party and former Under-Secretary General of the United Nations, and Anil Dharker, former newspaper editor, TV producer, film censor and now columnist.
