Fighting for Time: An Extended Interview

Bob Iritano knows he is going to die. He just wants a little more time. Time with his wife, and his family.

Bob has a terminal form of cancer. Still, his doctor said there is a procedure that could slow the cancer down, and prolong his life.

Just one problem. His insurance company said they wouldn't pay for the treatment.

This week, on SoCal Connected, we'll meet Bob Iritano and his family, and find out more about this story, which illustrates just how powerful health insurance companies can be in matters involving life. And death.

Here's an extended interview with Bob and his wife Karen.

Bob is a personal friend of mine for nearly 20 years. Thank you for running this 'true to the heart' story and for helping to get profit concerned Health Net off their butt and face the music. Our prayers and well wishes remain with Bob and his family. He is truly a wonderful individual.

Bob, It is great getting to know you more at fooball this year and hearing about what a positive attitude you have through all this. I hope Healthnet gets an earful over this and stops messing around!

My prayers are with you Karen and the kids. Please let us know if we can ever help you with anything! Actually we will just keep offering!!!

I know of no insurance policy the endorses policies to the exclusion of "covered procedures" which have been approved in the past during the same policy period.

I've heard of this insurance policy coding referred to as "murder by spreadsheet"

With prayer and persistence, the insurance company will break from their " god in a spreadsheet policy " and get an earful of what business they're really in. The good fight has been taken to the streets.

Bob, You and your family have been in our prayers since our son Ed, first told us about your battle with cancer. We will continue our prayers in hopes that Health Net will not refuse any treatments in the future and that they realize how precious every moment of your life is to your family and friends. God bless you.

Bob,

I sit here searching for "words" that cannot describe the emotions I am feeling for you, Karen and the kids. The book of life has many pages and I pray that the "Book of Bob Iritano" has many more chapters to go! Your drive and motivation is inspirational and puts everything in proper perspective.

Look forward to seeing you soon.

Bill, Vi & family

Bob, I don't know you, I received notice of this story through a friend. I am sorry about what you and your family are going through.

My question to the Insurance company is when did they become doctors? When did they get to decide what is medically necessary for you? I assume when they contracted with the physicians they made it perfectly clear what the medical expectations were and if your doctor felt this corse of treatment was appropriate, why are they questioning his judgement? Can you sue your insurance company for wrongful death, if you have faithfully paid your premiums and followed their contracted doctors instructions?

I wish I had words to make this better, hopefully when Health Net realizes that it is not just a business they are protecting but a life they are risking, things will change.

Bob and his family have been wonderful family friends with my family for about six years now. My 12 year old sister, Madison, and his eldest son Kevin, are great friends and my father and Bob work together in Westlake Village. We are blessed to have them in our life as they have continued to help make positive impacts on education and our school systems with volunteer work, as well as defined the true meaning of great friendship and strength to every person they have come across. This is a very crucial time for Bob and his family. Everything that can be done to extend his life MUST be done immediately! Please do everything you can to support Bob and his family and keep HealthNet insurance co. pressured to allow Bob to make choices for himself and live out the rest of his life the way he chooses to. Keep the publicity going, keep making phone calls, keep the radio stations and newpapers busy covering this issue! Do anything you can for a man who deserves this!! We all know that HealthNet DOES NOT want negative publicity so lets keep them on their feet and MAKE them take care of Bob the way they should! The more publicity, the better, wiser, decisons HealthNet will make quickly!!!!
My love and support go to Bob, Karen & all the kids. What a wonderful family! Lets help them NOW!!!

Hi Bob & Karen,

Health Net obviously doesn't know how amazing you are and how you have survived the toughest odds and continue to be the best parents, active community members and two of the loveliest people we have ever met.

Shame on Health Net! We love you and think of you all the time. Keep on fighting.

Love,

The Persichettis

Definitelyhave you and your family in my thoughts and prayers

Bob,

That is a true reason to want to live.

I heard about this from across the country where you have family thay loves and supports you very much. My prayers are with you and I hope your family gets their wish and the insurance company sees the support.

Chris

I read your story in the LA Times which led me to this page. I was very touched by what I read and am very saddened with the way HealthNet has treated you. Unfortunately this is very common with pretty much all insurance companies.

Have you considered alternative treatments at this point? The Hippocrates Institute in Florida has had great success with many cancer patients. They are expensive but have scholarship programs as well if it's not affordable for you. It might be worth a try. Here's their web address: www.hippocratesinst.org.

May God bless you and your family!

Bob,

Your story reached us in NC from your cousins Dave & Deanna who love and care for you very much! Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your entire family. Your motivation and inspiration is so powerful. You have our support on the east coast.

Andie & Karen

Bob and Karen you two are so motivating, strong and open. You are both amazing people, you have a strength like no other to remain happy! Our support and prayers are with you in this fight. However we can help please know we are willing and able.

God bless you both, Dean and Carol - Westlake Village

I have known Bob Iritano for over 15 yrs. It really upsets me that someone can sit in an office and play God, decide who lives and who does not. Please keep the pressure on HealtNet to do what they should be doing for the family so that these precious children may have as much time with their Father as possible. Bob you and your family are in my prayers.

Calvin,
I always look like that or something close. Its more like fell out of bed, crawled to the expresso machine and putting my mouth under the spigot look. Not a super special look, but it works. I look like I was too busy working to comb my mop. Thanks for visiting and commenting!!! :O) ophelia (and all the way from Toronto Canada too!!!)

I saw the story and was touched by it. I couldn't believe what I saw. If you pay for it then why would they not approve you, and not only that , but they bumped up your insurance premium. I am glad KCET made this story and put it out there. It seemed that the only reason that it was finally approved was because they were going to be blasted on public TV.
Bob and Karen you have an amazing family, keep fighting for all the time you need. My prayers go out to you and your family.

Dear Bob & Karen,

My daughter Carol Schultz called me this evening so I could bring up the KCET website and learn of your story.

I pray that HealthNet may find it in their hearts to listen to your doctors and grant you the treatment that you need.

May God Bless You and your family,

Lois Nelson, Maupin, Oregon

Bob,
I was touched by your story and I think with your kids still so young, that you should not give up the fight. I, too, am a cancer victim and I'm into alternative treatments. I hope you will try them as you have nothing to lose. There's so much information out there (from books and the internet) you just have to try which one will work for you. God bless.
