Ridley: First American President
I agree with the previous comment by Barry and was really offended by the remark that Obama is the only true American president we have ever had. What about Washington, Lincoln, & all of our founding fathers just to name a few. I think they would be rolling over in their graves if they heard this commentary.
I think Obama would be one of the first to say he is NOT the first true American to lead our nation, that he is indeed the product of our times, our own readiness to take responsibility and make it happen. I agree he is very inspiring, for me this is mostly because he keeps putting the focus back on us, to live fully and powerfully in our own lives. To work together within our communities. What purpose does it serve to say he's the first true American to lead our nation? This is not the energy I think President Obama would encourage! It doesn't work for me, anyway.

I am dismayed that you think he puts the focus back on you when all you hear from him is that Government is the answer. Yes he may speak of personal responsibility, but they are just words. Do you not hear him also say that Government is the only way out of the financial mess we are in. He wants our people to rely on the Government.

I thought John Ridley's commentary was so astute and novel that I came from the TV to the website to send it to a friend via email. I played it again for myself and enjoyed it.
Then I read the single comment that had been left here by "californian"!! My first reaction was surprise at the opposite reactions he and I had to the same material. It reminded me of the bitterness that is out there regarding race.
Above all, his basic, fundamental misunderstanding of the content of John Ridley's commentary speaks volumes about how hostilities are fed.
To me, the writer is not actually upset that time was wasted on commentary regarding anything other than the "global situation." He should listen again to the three categories that John Ridley puts forward in his argument: they are very inclusive for millions of Americans. Quite possibly, "californian" didn't have a dad buy him a baseball team, either. I am a white female who can identify with all the categories of experience that John Ridley described.
It's time to put the BDS away. It IS ridiculous to attach so much reverence to a man who has done nothing his whole political career except get elected. This commentary shows how well Obama and his team presented him as all things to as many people as possible. So far, he has selected a tax scofflaw as Treasury chief, a probable purjerer as AG and a Secretary of State beholden to foreign interests. Not a very good start.

He opposes the right of conscience, and believes people should be forced to tithe to his church of hope and change, forcing those who oppose them to fund the "good works" (like killing babies) and moral framework he believes in.
