The wait is over. The cardinals have made their choice. A new Pope has been selected. He is Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina, the first non-European Pope of modern times. He will assume the name Francis I.
The puff of white smoke signifying a new Pope had been selected came at 11:15 our time, early evening in Rome after a fifth round of voting.
CNN's Erin McLaughlin and Al Jazeera's Emma Hayward have the latest from Rome.
