Angelenos are bracing for the worst of all possible weekends. In car-conscious Southern California, the 405 shutdown is the equivalent of a natural disaster.

But look what happened in 1984, when the Los Angeles Olympics brought the same dire predictions of total gridlock. The region somehow managed to avoid massive freeway congestion and transit meltdown. What did they do right?
