Where's Huell? (Apr. 16 - Apr. 20)

What's a week without the continued adventures of our Golden State-trotting hero, Huell Howser? A week without sunshine: That's what. This week, Huell treks from San Juan Bautista to Buttonwillow, doing everything from eating weeds in a vacant lot in downtown L.A. to finding out where ladybugs come from.

Monday -- April 16, 7:30 PM: Ladybugs

Yes, Huell gets to the bottom of where ladybugs from. But do I mean who puts the ladybugs in the bags at garden stores? Or am I actually speaking about the mechanics of the birds and the bees, specifically as they pertain to ladybugs? Wouldn't you be curious either way?

Tuesday -- April 17, 7:30 PM: Survival Food

Let this be a lesson to you if you're ever stranded downtown: Weeds can be a creative and healthy source of food. Huell hangs out with urban survivalist Christopher Nyerges in a vacant lot, where he learns what leafy greens taste good right fresh from the ground... and which ones you'd better avoid. (And check out KCET Departures's profile of Nyerges and his survivalist ways here.)

Wednesday -- April 18, 7:30 PM: Cotton

Who could turn down a place with a name as inherently cute as "Buttonwillow"? Not Huell, and hopefully not you either. Check out Huell as he explores the Cotton Capitol of California, the San Joaquin Valley ag community of Buttonwillow, where he examines both old-timey and cutting-edge cotton technology.

It's not just cotton. Check out Buttonwillow's decidedly non-soft, non-fluffy racetrack:

Thursday -- April 19, 7:30 PM: Huell Howser Discovers 'Bits and Pieces'

Have you ever said, "Huell, I love you, but what if you did a bunch of little trips instead of one 30-minute-long adventure"? Thursday is your day. Watch as Huell darts from an ostrich farm in Buellton (just north of Santa Barbara) to the famed two-story outhouse of San Juan Bautista (near Gilroy) to edible cactus farm in the Salinas Valley. It's the best of the accidental discoveries Huell's found as he's traveled across California in search of other stories.

Friday -- April 20, 7:30 PM: Watch Convention

Huell heads to Pasadena for the annual convention of the National Association of Watch & Clock Collections, one of the foremost groups for chonometrophiles. And yes, that means "clock lovers," and yes, that's a word. If you think that Huell won't get to the root of what's ticking, then you don't know Huell Howser. And if you think that Huell doesn't wear his official California Gold wristwatch, then you really don't know Huell Howser.
