Vale de Almeida addresses the root cause of the European debt crisis that originated in the global financial crisis in 2008, highlighting that the aftershock of the worldwide crisis in 2008 generated significant repercussions, and had a far greater impact on the countries that are more vulnerable to financial instabilities, eventually revealing and highlighting the systemic problems that the European Union has had from its conception as a monetary union. Ambassador Vale de Almeida concludes by highlighting new measures and unprecedented mechanisms that have been implemented to assist countries that showed their vulnerability.
