John and Barbara Whitmarsh have been married for 31 years. The couple met in 1980 while John was an assistant professor and Barbara a postdoctoral student. They have raised six children (three from John's former marriage) and both had successful careers as scientists. John started noticing changes in his wife several years ago, changes in her personality and how she interacted with him and the family. Barbara was eventually diagnosed with Frontotemporal Degeneration, FTD. FTD is a degenerative disease of the brain that causes behavioral changes and loss of language.
