His Story: Steve Lopez is a renowned columnist for the Los Angeles Times and author of the book, The Soloist which became a major motion picture. Over the course of several months, Steve chronicled his family's journey in caregiving for their 89-year-old father who was dying. A successful journalist, Steve was surprised by his own inability to come up with solutions. The response to his columns was overwhelming. Steve struck a nerve with readers when he raised such issues as dying with dignity and the high medical costs incurred during the last months of one's life. He has opened the discussion as to how we, as a society, need to deal with end-of-life decisions and care.
Reflection: "I have to admit that I don't have all the answers on what we need to do. I do think though, that people need to become better educated on what their end of life choices might be."
