As part of our Summer in L.A. content, we asked local bookstores to tell us their top Summer reads.

Ruby Vassar from Vroman's Bookstore on her favorite SoCal-related reads:

Southern California is an amazing place to live. We have beaches, mountains, deserts, lakes, rivers, food and people from everywhere in the world, fresh produce, and a reasonable excuse to have a story on the news about how to handle a few inches of rain (seriously. I wish I could find the clip, it was pure gold). Our sunsets are beautiful, every city has something interesting going on, and we house the movie capital of the world, Disneyland, and some of the best independent bookstores in the country. Ok, maybe that was a bit of a shameless plug, there, but Southern California has inspired authors since they knew it was here. Fiction, non-fiction, travel guides, and even cookbooks have used Southern California as a backdrop countless times, both for its stunning beauty and abundance and for its gritty edges. As the largest independent bookstore in Southern California, Vroman's keeps a sharp eye on books about our area - check out our California and the West section next time you're in the store, or come to one of our author events, which frequently feature local authors. For now, though, take a look at some of my favorite books set in or inspired by Southern California's endless variations.

1. Michelle Huneven: Blame, Jamesland, Round Rock

Michelle Huneven is one of those great local authors who writes about her area in a way that makes you feel like you know a place, covering both the good and the bad. It's not the names that tell you where the book is set, it's in the details - the way the buildings look, the types of flowers, that intangible feeling that just says you're in Southern California.Blame follows a recovering alcoholic through Pasadena and the surrounding cities,Jamesland takes place in Los Feliz, and Round Rock covers rural California in the fictional Santa Bernita Valley, the location of a 'drunk farm' and a love triangle.

2. Colleen Dunn Bates (Prospect Park Books): The Hometown Series, EAT LA

Colleen Dunn Bates edited the first 'hometown' book, Hometown Pasadena, in 2006. Since then, Prospect Park Books has published an updated version, plus Hometown Santa Barbara, Hometown Santa Monica, and books on California places from Mammoth to San Juan Capistrano. Every single one is beautifully laid out with plenty of pictures and packed with useful information, anecdotes, and fun things to do. For the Los Angeles foodies, try EAT LA 2010: it's got the same blend of usefulness and fun.

3. Suzanne Goin: Sunday Suppers at Lucques

It was a friend that introduced me to this cookbook, which remains among my favorites to this day. The difficulty level is sometimes high, especially since it calls for ingredients and kitchen devices your average cook doesn't have on hand, but if you read the recipe carefully and are willing to experiment and improvise (or shell out some cash) you end up with some amazing food. Why does it belong on this list? Because Lucques Restaurant, located in Los Angeles, uses local produce in their Sunday prix fixe menus. Goin provides a directory of local farmers markets all over Southern California, plus profiles all of the produce used in the cookbook, including when it is in season, what to look for when you're buying it, and other helpful tips.

4. Naomi Hirahara: The Summer of the Big Bachi, Gasa-Gasa Girl,Blood Hina

Focusing on a different area of the city in every new mystery, Naomi Hirahara follows grumpy gardener, Hiroshima survivor, and reluctant sleuth Mas Arai as he navigates life in Southern California and solves the crimes that always seem to find him. Her latest book in the series, Blood Hina , takes Mas to the Los Angeles Flower Market among other places, and all four books in the series deal with the multi-cultural nature of Los Angeles (Japanese American culture gets the heaviest focus).

5. Kevin Starr: The American and the California Dream Series

No list of books about any part of California is complete without mentioning Kevin Starr. His multi-volume history of California, starting in 1850 and covering periods of change through 2002 has to be the most intense, in-depth examination of California out there. Not specifically Southern California, but really, there is no replacement. This is the one.

I feel like I haven't even scratched the surface, here: There's John Buntin's new history L.A. Noir, Janet Fitch's White Oleander, Nina Revoyr's Southland, James Ellroy, Charlie Huston... the list goes on and on. Feel free to add your own favorites in the comments; let's keep the list growing!

Which novels nicely complement a warm summer day in L.A.? As part of our Summer in L.A. content, we went to Skylight Books for the answer. Here's the indie book store's choice picks:

"Los Angeles, give me some of you! Los Angeles come to me the way I came to you, my feet over your streets, you pretty town I loved you so much, you sad flower in the sand, you pretty town!"
-- John Fante, Ask the Dust

Comfortably nestled in Los Feliz on Vermont Ave., Skylight Books has a strong and unique connection to books about our fair city of Los Angeles. We would be remiss if we didn't mention the novels and poetry of Charles Bukowski, or the fiction of John Fante--in particular, Ask the Dust and Dreams of Bunker Hill--as staples of our bookstore diet. But our staff also has some favorites that they will more than likely put firmly in your hand if you utter the question, "What are your favorite novels about Los Angeles?"

Many novels old and new have turned to our mercurial city for inspiration and setting, but we have a few favorites. An author that comes up often is Nina Revoyr. Dan and Emily are big fans and recommend Southland and The Age of Dreaming , respectively. Southland delivers a compelling read about the racial and ethnic stories that are part of this city's ever-changing history. Revoyr addresses racial tensions again in her third novel, The Age of Dreaming, which centers on an aging silent movie star and is described as "part historical novel, part mystery, and part unrequited love story."

And speaking of novels about movies that feature a "cineautistic" film editor, Steve Erickson's Zeroville scored high with quite a few of our booksellers. Emily thinks that Tortilla Curtain, T.C. Boyle's lean social epic about finding the American dream, is a classic L.A. read. Our basketball star, Liz, wouldn't have you leave the store without a copy of Nathaniel West's Day of the Locust, about a group of disillusioned movie industry outsiders during the Great Depression.

If you're looking for a bit of alternative lifestyle fodder, a store favorite is John Rechy. His classic City of Night and its follow-up, The Coming of Night, are an homage to gay Los Angeles from the sixties to the eighties. And if you're looking for the perfect read that address the fallowness of celebrity L.A., Joan Didion's Play It as It Lays for cutting commentary on Hollywood in the sixties.

Arlo and Monica think Janet Fitch's Paint It Black perfectly captures the eighties punk scene in Los Angeles. Several of our past and present staff members couldn't wait for us to mention Salvador Plascencia's People of Paper about a group of people who move from Mexico to Los Angeles. Our illustrious manager, Steve, raves about the new Scott Bradfield novel, The People Who Watched Her Pass By, which chronicles a three-year-old's quest for self-discovery through L.A. and points beyond.

Monica thinks that whenever you're down and out in L.A. you should grab a copy of Joseph Mattson's little book of short stories, Eat Hell, shove it in your ripped jeans and head to the Sunset Strip. If you want a literary page turner that hearts Silver Lake, try Silver Lake, by Peter Gadol.

And our general manager and co-owner Kerry Slattery recently blurbed the new Brando Skyhorse novel, The Madonnas of Echo Park, which she describes as a "powerful, touching, and revelatory novel, reminiscent of The Bridge of San Luis Rey in its fatefully interrelated secret stories. These long-time Mexican-American residents of a changing L.A. neighborhood struggle for identity and are often almost invisible to the worlds they work in, but their compelling and sometimes shocking stories leave an indelible stamp on an increasingly gentrified neighborhood. Skyhorse is an important chronicler of a community that needs to be heard from."

And this is just a selection of what Skylight Books staffers think you should read if you're looking for some great, interesting novels about Los Angeles and all the stories our city holds within its streets.

KCET thanks Skyights Books for contributing to Summer in L.A.: Top SoCal Books. Don't forget to check out the Skylight Books blog this summer for other great picks.

Calling all SoCal book lovers: The next installment of the KCET Online Book Club is here!

For the month of April we are bringing you Andrea Levy's best-selling and award-winning Small Island, which will coincide with Masterpiece Classic's premiere of a two-part adaption of the novel airing April 18th and April 25th. (You can buy a copy of Small Island here, helping to support KCET in the process).

Masterpiece describes the Orange Prize-winning novel - and their adaptation - thusly:

Small Island, an uplifting and powerful story of Jamaican immigrants arriving in war-ravaged London with hope, energy and a limitless capacity to accept rejection, comes to Masterpiece classic in a two-part adaptation starring Naomie Harris (Pirates of the Caribbean) and David Oyelowo (The Last King of Scotland). Small Island also stars Ruth Wilson (Jane Eyre) and Benedict Cumberbatch (The Last Enemy) as Queenie and Bernard, a conventional but mismatched English couple who end up as landlords to new immigrants Hortense and Gilbert (played by Harris and Oyelowo). The relations between the four, each of whom faces a grueling personal struggle, are the occasion for gentle humor and intense heartbreak. Small Island is based on Andrea Levy's best-selling, award-winning novel.

On Friday, April 30th, we'll be convening here at the KCET Online Book Club (as well as on Twitter using the #KCETBOOK hashtag) to discuss the book. So get your copy of Small Island and keep an eye out for updates here at the KCET Book Online Club.

Using the comments below, you can share your thoughts about both the book and an exciting new interpretation of Emma, airing on Masterpiece: Classic this Sunday, January 31st on KCET.

WHEN: Feel free to comment at anytime, but we will be allowing open commenting on Friday, January 22nd, from 11am to 5pm PST. That means, for the entire afternoon, your comments will be appearing automatically in the area below. (Remember, use your commenting powers for good!)

WHERE: Right here!

TOPICS: Jane Austen, Masterpiece Classics, Emma, Book Clubs, & Reading.

WHO: Members of the KCET staff and you.

Let the book-clubbing continue!

The Volume II Quote of the Day:

"Human nature is so well disposed towards those who are in interesting situations, that a young person, who either marries or dies, is sure of being kindly spoken of."

This is an exacting, complicated claim by Austen. What does she believe an 'interesting situation' to be, exactly? What specific situations in Emma is she referring to? Is Austen wrong to assume that a young person must be married or dead in order to be well-regarded? And does marriage even ensure that regard?

Today's Quotes of the Day:

"I would much rather have been merry than wise."

"Goldsmith tells us, that when lovely woman stoops to folly, she has nothing to do but die; and when she stoops to be disagreeable, it is equally to be recommended as a clearer of ill-fame."

From the discussions on Pemberly.com:

http://www.pemberley.com/bin/emma/emma.cgi?read=32089
Written by Laraine (1/25/2010 12:08 a.m.)

It wasn't as bad as I feared it might be. It dumbed my favorite novel down, but then pretty much everyone has.

I still don't think that Romola Garai is right for Emma, but I can't blame her for anachronistic attitudes and dialog [that] Welsh and the director often gave her to express.

Why did anyone think that mischievous describes Emma? She might have been that way as a little girl, but as an adult, it doesn't describe her. Headstrong, mistaken, conceited, yes--but Emma isn't naughty (which is what that word means to me and a lot of other people).

I loved Robert Martin. Harriet was OK, but I can't say that that I found her charming, exactly.

Mr. Elton was very good, IMHO. And I liked Michael Gambon--although I thought the writing was not his friend either.

Johnny Lee Miller was quite good. I think he was the right mixed of smart, playful, and just slightly lovestruck. Again, some of his dialog left much to be desired, but I did think that he gave us a nice performance.

http://www.pemberley.com/bin/emma/emma.cgi?read=32119
Written by Sandy W (1/25/2010 12:08 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Well..., penned by Laraine

It reminds me a good deal of E1 with a lot of the same dialogue (naturally). However, I find the actors in E1 better suited for their parts. There have been a few changes that have been interesting. But I think you all have it right, Emma isn't cast right and it's throwing the whole thing off. (Although there are others who don't seem quite right either.) I was able to get a lot done while it was on instead of being rivited to the television. I would have rather had it the other way around. It seems like they are all just going through the motions instead of really getting into what Emma was all about.

And from the Twitter Party:

ORPrep @queenie_nyc Yes, but other Emmas hid the selfishness from the outside world. Only Knightly knew her mind. This one an open book. #emma_pbs

geekmum Watching #Emma_PBS again today... loving this version... and thoroughly LURVE the soundtrack!!

JLS_Murmuration Friggin' lurved #emma_pbs last night. Using the sort of 'horribly awkward' style comedy that Britain has excelled at over last decade.

LOL! RT @HighburyFeed: Dumbledore's not dead! He lives in Highbury! #emma_pbs

And from the KCET Book Club just before the show:

http://kcet.org/local/bookclub/2010/01/lets-talk-emma.html

Regarding Emma being spoiled.... for me, Ms. Austen put it in our minds in the first two paragraphs of her description of Emma - "rich living in a comfortable home, little to distress or vex her, the lady of the house from early on, has an indulgent father, the power of having too much her own way and a disposition to think a little two much of herself." Most know the storyline, but since we're talking only about Part 1, its easy for some of us to feel this way. :))

LOL, the more I read and the story comes back to me, the matchmaking is a hobby for Emma. I feel she does it with kindness and love in her heart.

I feel that Mr. Knightley is the male version of Emma. Him feeling that the friendship between Emma and Harriet "is a bad thing" sounds like something Emma would say.

Now's your turn!

How did you enjoy the production?
How does it compare to other versions of Emma that you have seen?
How does it compare to the book?

Starting today, KCET.org is inviting book lovers throughout Southern California to join us in a literary experiment: the KCET Online Book Club. Much of our on-air programming and community initiatives have strong literary roots. We want to bring those interconnected strands together in a new area where you can to talk with one another (and us) about the books you love.

The Online Book Club works like this:

We pick a book

We build a place on our site for you to talk about the book

We provide additional resources related to the book to help round out the conversation

You share your passions, opinions and reactions!

The first installment of the KCET Online Book Club will coincide with Masterpiece Classic's January 24th premiere of a new, three-part interpretation of Jane Austen's Emma.
Every Friday before one of the three Emma episodes, we'll be convening here in the KCET Online Book Club to discuss a portion of the book. Fortunately, Emma itself breaks down into three neat volumes, allowing for a very tidy reading schedule:

Volume 1 of Emma should be read by January 22, 2008, just before Episode 1 airs on January 24th

Volume 2 of Emma should be read by January 29, 2010, just before Episode 2 airs on January 31st

Volume 3 of Emma should be read by February 5, 2010, just before Episode 3 airs on February 7th

So get your copy of Emma and keep an eye out for updates here at the KCET Book Club.
