Enjoy an easy walk or bike ride, try some fishing or just enjoy the sights and sounds of this soft-bottomed section of the river where birds, fish and lush plant life thrive. The newly-renovated bike path runs along the west bank, passing numerous small pocket parks. The bike path ends at Egret Park, which is a good place for a rest before turning around.

STARTING POINT

Begin at Fletcher Drive as it passes over the river and head downriver. After 2.5 miles the bike path appears and the soft-bottom channel peters out.

DIRECTIONS TO THE START

Car: Take the 101 and exit on Silver Lake Boulevard. Go east on Silver Lake Boulevard and turn left on Glendale Boulevard. Take the first right onto Fletcher Drive.

Transit: Take the 92 Bus and get off at Glendale and Farwell. Walk south on Glendale Boulevard and turn left on Fletcher Drive.

NEARBY PARKS

Rattlesnake Park is located just off Fletcher Drive and features the Great Heron Gates, an artistic interpretation of the wildlife of the L.A. River. The gates are designed by sculptor Brett Goldstone.

Rio de Los Angeles State Park is a 17-acre park, opened in 2007, that offers open space, soccer fields, restrooms, and a natural habitat hiking path. It is currently separated from the river by railroad tracks and the Taylor rail yard. In the future, the plan is to connect it to the Taylor Yard and river.

Steelhead Park is located on the river at Oros Street and features a small outdoor amphitheater. The wrought iron fence around this park is adorned with Steelhead Trout, the L.A. River's native fish.

River Garden Park is located at the northern tip of the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens, a mission-style facility that was formerly Lawry's Restaurant. Today the center offers a bicycle staging area with drinking fountain, a repair station and restroom, as well as a visitor center about the River, and a picnic, garden and park area.

Lions and Tigers and Cameras! How the Movies Gave Los Angeles a Zoo

The early days of the movies in Los Angeles inadvertently allowed visitors to experience the largest collection of animals in the western United States. When animals weren't appearing in a movie, they were rented out to other film companies, performed for studio visitors, or in the case of filmmaker William Selig's collection — an opportunity to create one of Los Angeles' first zoos.
