John Valadez is a realist painter and muralist who has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the US, Europe, and Mexico. In the 1970s and 1980s Valadez worked actively with Chicano Arts Movement collectives including, Los Four and Centro de Arte Publico in Highland Park, addressing the lack of studio space and access to art for Latinos. Valadez's work, often are murals that no longer exist, focused on giving visibility to a Mexican-American Los Angeles. Valadez discusses his role in these Highland Park collectives and the development of his work for "Painting the Walls."
