Sonya Fe, painter and muralist involved in the Chicana/o Arts Movement of the 1970s
Sonya Fe is a painter and muralist long affiliated with the Chicana/o arts movement and Latina empowerment. Her work reflects social and cultural issues with themes centering around child abuse/neglect and women's place in society. Following a trip to Mexico in her youth, Fe was exposed to Latin American art and iconography, which then inspired her own artwork and advocacy to create more progressive visibility of Chicanas in art. She worked with the Mechiano Arts Center in Highland Park shortly after earning her Bachelor Degree from the Art Center College of Design, directing screening printing workshops and painting murals. Fe shared her experiences with the collective in addition to her personal growth as a Chicana artist with Departures: Highland Park.
