Sybil Venegas, art historian and director of the Chicana/o Studies Department at East Los Angeles College
Sybil Venegas is an art historian, professor, and chair of the Chicana/Chicano Studies department at East Los Angeles College. She studied with famed Mexican art historian Shifra Goldman and worked at Self-Help Graphics. As a contributor to Chisme Arte, a publication on Chicano art, Venegas wrote a landmark piece titled "Conditions for Producing Chicana Art," which put female artists in the spotlight for the first time. She discusses the role of feminism in Chicana/o arts history with Departures in our "Painting the Walls" chapter.
