William Deverell is the director of the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West. Deverell is the author of numerous studies on the 19th and 20th century American West and his recent publications include; Whitewashed Adobe: The Rise of Los Angeles and the Remaking of Its Mexican Past, and Land of Sunshine: The Environmental History of Metropolitan Los Angeles. Deverell contributes his historical expertise to various chapters in Departures: Highland Park that involve land use, property rights, population shifts and ethnic ownership of a region.
