December 10th: En Plein Air in El Segundo

En Plein Air in El Segundo is an outdoor "draw-in" taking place on the streets of El Segundo near the war contractor by the ocean, Northrop Grumman. "Sketching" should be considered a metaphor here as we welcome you and any art métier that traces the streetscape—imagine public dance (ie. tracing with your feet), mapping as-built architecture, watercolor painting, witnessesing the home of the B-2 Bomber. The public is welcome to come with a beach chair, a favorite sketching pad, walking shoes, or just themselves. Some drawing supplies will be provided.

Geographically minded poets Diane Ward and Jane Sprague will be on hand to read some of their poems as we sketch.

Artists Hillary Mushkin and Robby Herbst are co-organizing this event. Mushkin's Incendiary Traces is a developing community-generated archive that explores the role of landscape imagery in international conflict. It looks at Los Angeles' palm-tree dotted landscapes as well as the subtropical foreign conflict zones where LA's mostly non-native palms originate: Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa. This winter Robby Herbst's Llano Del Rio Collective will be releasing "An Antagonists Guide To Jerks and A*holes In LA." This guide will map the private and public sites in Los Angeles that inspire ire.

If you so please, your art created during this event may become part of the Incendiary Traces online archive. Departures will be there to document the proceedings and hear from the artists.
