I grew up in Gardena, CA. where my maternal grandparents settled in the early 1900's. My grandfather raised strawberries and trucked produce from the area to the produce market downtown. I found out reading a book on the history of Japanese Americans in agriculture in California, my grandfather leased stalls in the City Market and sold produce from local Japanese American farmers. After World War II when my mother's family came back from Manzinar Relocation Center (aka Concentration Camp) in 1946, He was one of the few fortunate ones to have his home and possessions taken care of when they were evacuated. I remember, growing up and spending winter break going to my grandparents home every day and finding tables of food for us to eat for the entire two week holiday vacation.
