Play the L.A. River is a come-one-come-all project by the arts collective Project 51 -- a collective of L.A. River-loving artists, designers, planners, writers, educators -- that invites Angelenos to explore, enjoy, reclaim, and reimagine the mighty L.A. River as a grand civic space that can green and connect our communities.CARD: 2 of Glendale Narrows

In the shadow of media giants, under a freeway, and jam-packed with art. Still to come: an extension to Verdugo Wash and a bridge to Griffith Park.

What used to be a seedy, insecure lot has recently been transformed into a half-mile of recreational area on the north bank of the Los Angeles River, newly lined with native California trees and shrubs. Benches, seating areas and wide-open paths welcome visitors, as well as a public art installation inspired by stop motion. An ornamental fencing depicting scenes from the Los Angeles River fabricated by artist Brett Goldstone delicately encloses this new community treasure.
