Play the L.A. River is a come-one-come-all project by the arts collective Project 51 -- a collective of L.A. River-loving artists, designers, planners, writers, educators -- that invites Angelenos to explore, enjoy, reclaim, and reimagine the mighty L.A. River as a grand civic space that can green and connect our communities.

CARD: 5 of South

SITE: Southern Avenue + Burtis Street, South Gate 90280

A plain-jane river entrance in the orbit of the old GM plant, and just blocks from the City's 96-acre park and 2-mile greenway.

As you exit the tiny Cudahy as soon as you enter along the L.A. River bike path, you'll soon find yourself in South Gate, winner of the All American City award in 1990. From the river path gate at Souther Avenue, you can quickly grab a horchata latte at the popular Tierra Mia cafe, or head a bit deeper into the city and you'll find the large and peaceful South Gate Park, where you'll find athletic fields, outdoor basketball courts, playgrounds, tennis courts, a skate park, picnic areas, and even a 9 hole par 3 golf course -- not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
