Some background:
In the summer of 2009, we launched our Los Angeles River installment, the fourth since its inception in 2007. Prior, we explored Boyle Heights, Watts, and Eagle Rock.

With the redesign of the KCET.org web site in March 2010, the Departures' platform provided an opportunity for a deeper investigation of the communities we explored while providing users more freedom to interact with and share the interviews we produced. We also revamped our high school digital literacy program to be more integrated with the Departures production, and launched StoryShare, a community storytelling tool. As a result, we have been able to engage our audience and community more effectively.

With the revamped web site, we revisited the LA River to address current issues such as the application of the Clean Water Act, and new developments, such as Piggyback Yard. In addition, we reviewed ongoing issues and topics such as pollution, the environment and the ecosystem, land use and development, gentrification, and the history of the LA River.

We look forward to sharing the LA River Installment with you soon, in the meantime, explore some of our other neighborhoods: Venice, Chinatown, and Richland Farms.
