Dance marathons became the thing to do in Los Angeles during the 1920's, and nowhere was this more popular and visible than in Venice. Dance halls offered cash prizes and other rewards for the couples that endured the longest - couples sometimes lasting for 24 hours or more. The 1969 film They Shoot Horses Don't They, based on the book written by local dance hall bouncer Horace McCoy, chronicles the drama of a young dancing couple willing to risk their lives to earn some dollars during the Depression.
