The Warmth of Other Suns is an appropriate title during a week of record setting temps. Written by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and professor Isabel Wilkerson, Suns chronicles the pivotal move for African Americans known as the Great Migration. Three voices are used to chart the migration from South to the North, as well as to Western cities including Los Angeles. Departures Venice spoke to Jataun Valentine and Navalette Bailey in Oakwood, who moved to Los Angeles during that period. Just as the migration changed Valentine and Baily's life, it was also a factor in lives of some our most accomplished citizens, including the family of Michelle Obama. This recent story in the Los Angeles Times details dynamic turn of events that would not have taken place if not for the move.
