Chinatown Interview Practice

Student producers at the Chinatown Service Center's Youth Council did some video self-interviews this week as a warm-up for production. We covered the basics of composition, location scouting, and sound, and also reviewed strategies for asking questions. The students were thrilled about finally getting behind the camera, perhaps not so thrilled to get in front of it. But, they did a great job of answering questions without much preparation. Watch the video above to see an edited piece from the footage.

Next week, we plan to go more into depth about sound recording and design, as the students prepare to interview their parents and explore the story of their immigration to the United States. In a few more weeks, students will be running around Chinatown to film their personal hot spots for the Student Edition of Departures Chinatown. Keep an eye out for some sneak previews.
